FDNY Box 6-6-55-798 524 West 43rd St 1/23/1985
Wednesday January 23, 1985 a verbal alarm was given from the quarters of Rescue 1 at 19:26 for a fire at the Weiser Piano Company next to the firehouse. Engine 54 arrived to a smoke condition and radioed the CO "we have a fire". As they investigated fire was found in the basement of the 8 story brick 125 X 90 building. A 10-75 was transmitted setting the stage for spectacular blaze that consumed the entire building and spread to adjoining buildings on West 42nd St. Five Alarms were transmitted on the sub-zero night. At the height of the fire the 8 story building collapsed on to the roof of Rescue 1's quarters. Debris crashed thru all 3 floors of the firehouse. On Friday I stopped at the scene as members of Rescue 1 entered the station.
